Tasked with transforming an internal stairwell, we took on what could only be described as ‘open-heart surgery’ to this beautiful home.
Working to Michaelis Boyd’s design, we carefully removed the existing staircase and its surrounding structure and walls across two levels, creating space for striking glazed Crittall partitions.
With the surrounding load-bearing walls removed, the new staircase had to appear almost weightless. A steel stringer stair design was adopted and expertly over-clad with Schotten Hansen flooring. One of the project’s greatest challenges was retaining the original steel balustrade and continuous handrail – something considered near impossible. Achieving this required exceptional precision, ensuring the new staircase seamlessly connected to the existing balustrade, tread by tread, like a perfectly assembled puzzle.
Additional refinements, including new timber flooring, lighting and redecoration, further enhance the home’s character. Now, the Crittall glazing floods the living spaces with natural light, making the stairwell not just a functional upgrade, but also a standout architectural feature.
